Active Immunization Against 5α-androstane-3α, 17β-diol Increases Ovulation Rate in Merino Ewes OAK
TETSUKA, Masafumi; NANCARROW, Colin. D.; 手塚, 雅文.
Cyclic Merino ewes were immunized three times against 5α−androstane-3α,17β-diol (3α-diol) at three week intervals (weeks 0,3 and 6). After the third immunization, estrous cycles were synchronized by a series of PG injections and intensive blood samples were obtained for gonadotropin analyses during the mid-luteal phase and during the early follicular phase. Ovulation rates were determined after each immunization and subsequent cloprostenol (PG)-induced luteolysis (weeks 3, 6, 8 and 11). After the second immunization, daily blood samples were obtained and concentrations of plasma progesterone (P) were measured. Immunization against 3α-diol significantly increased the ovulation rate after the second and third immunizations and at week 10 (P<0.01,...

Advances in the artificial feeding of Ornithodoros moubata (Acari: Ixodidae) and the follow up of its life cycle after feeding on fetal bovine serum OAK
Ruheta, Martin R.; Inoue, Noboru; Fujisaki, Kozo.
Ornithodoros moubata was fed artificially through a parafilm membrane with two types of artificial meals. The first type was composed of bovine and horse red blood cells suspended in phosphate buffered saline or fetal bovine serum (FBS). The second type was composed of FBS alone. Engorgement and post engorgement survival rates of the ticks after feeding on the two types of meals were compared and analysed statistically. FBS was found to be superior to red blood cell meals. Eventually two batches of FBS from different manufacturers were used to feed the ticks through artificial membrane. Engorgement and post engorgement survival rates were again compared and analysed statistically. There was no significant difference between the two lots. Finally O. moubata...

Age at first calving and factors influencing it in dairy heifers kept by smallholder farmers in Southern Malawi OAK
Watanabe, Keitaro; Lewis, Brian; Mlewah, Taurayi Belo; Tetsuka, Masafumi.
Delayed age at first calving (AFC) is known to decrease productivity in dairy cattle. In the present study, we investigated AFC in heifers kept by smallholder farmers in southern Malawi and the reproductive factors influencing it. Data were obtained for 1,620 heifers over a 13-year period from 1999 to 2012. The age at first service (AFS), first service to conception interval (FSCoI), number of services per conception (NSC), conception rate (CR) and service interval (SI) were investigated in relation to AFC. The median AFC was found to be 41 months. This is a relatively high value and shows no improvement from the values reported in the 1970s and 1980s. The median AFS was also high (23 months). Overall, the 1st service CR was 42%, and the median SI was 83...

Aggravation of pathogenesis mediated by aflatoxin B1 in mice infected with Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense OAK
Kibugu, J.K; Makumi, J.N; Ngeranwa, J.J.N; Kagira, J.M; Gathumbi, J.K; Mwangi, J.N.
Aflatoxins are known to alter the pathogenesis of many infectious diseases, but such effects have not been evaluated in trypanosome infections. The aim of the present work was to assess the effects of aflatoxin B1 on the pathogenesis of Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense infection using a murine model. Mice fed on 0.50 mg/kg aflatoxin b. wt. were infected with T. b. rhodesiense and compared to trypanosome infected and uninfected aflatoxin-fed controls. The clinical and pathological changes were determined and the quantitative data statistically analysed using standard methods. The results showed that infected aflatoxin-fed mice had pronounced dyspnoea, significantly (P<0.05) reduced survival, extreme emaciation, pronounced macrocytic normochromic anaemia...

We examined the effects of Amylomyces rouxii, which is a mold found in some fermented foods in Indonesia, on serum cholesterol and hepatic LDL receptor mRNA in rats. Rats were fed a 0.5% cholesterol-enriched diet with (A. rouxii group) or without (control group) 30g/kg A. rouxii for 4 wk. There were no significant differences in the body weight, food intake or liver weight among the groups. However, the weight of the cecum in the A. rouxii-fed group was significantly higher than that in the control group. The cecal pH in the A. rouxii-fed group was significantly lower than that in the control group. Cecal acetic acid, propionic acid and total SCFA concentrations in the A. rouxii-fed group were significantly higher than those in the control group. The serum...

An activity using the Moodle database module in a blended learning environment to practice all four English skills with Japanese university students OAK
Campbell, David; キャンベル, ディビッド.
In this paper I will share a simple four skills activity that can be set up in the Moodle database module that “kills many birds with one stone.” In many activities in the foreign language classroom there are logistical problems that need to be overcome when an instructor wishes to do communicative activities. For example, in a class with a large number of students, 40 or more, it can be difficult and time consuming to create pairs or groups. If you want people to have multiple partners, again there is the problem of moving students around and the delays involved in the process. If the activity is paper based then there is the problem of collecting and redistributing the paper. If the instructor wants to get an idea of the students’ output, there is the...

An Acute-phase Protein as a Regulator of Sperm Survival in the Bovine Oviduct: Alpha 1-acid-glycoprotein Impairs Neutrophil Phagocytosis of Sperm In Vitro OAK

We have previously shown that polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) are present in bovine oviduct fluid under physiological conditions, and that the oviduct provides a microenvironment that protects sperm from phagocytosis by PMNs. Alpha 1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) is a major acute-phase protein produced mainly in the liver that has immunomodulatory functions. AGP mRNA is expressed in extrahepatic organs, such as the lung, kidney, spleen, lymph node, uterus, and ovary. Therefore, in this study, we investigated, 1) the local production of AGP in the bovine oviduct, 2) the effect of AGP on the phagocytic activity of PMNs for sperm and superoxide production and 3) the impact of AGP desialylation on the PMN phagocytosis of sperm. The AGP gene was expressed in...

An analysis of natural factors of traffic accidents involving Yezo deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis) OAK
Kawata, Yukichika.
In Hokkaido, Japan, the number of Yezo deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis) has recently increased drastically, causing a large number of deer-vehicle traffic accidents. This paper examines conditions related to deer-vehicle traffic accidents by analysing the following relationships: time of accident and lunar phase; time of accidents and time of sunrise/sunset; likelihood of accidents and rainfall patterns, temperature and season (particularly snow and hunting seasons). The results suggest that the potential for deer-vehicle traffic accidents increases during hunting and non-snow seasons when there is little or no rainfall, just before sunrise or just after sunset, or during a full, first quarter, or third quarter moon. A statistically significant relationship...
